What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a safe and effective form of treatment that works by stimulating the body's own healing power; leading to improved physical and emotional health and a greater sense of well-being. It is widely used to treat adults, children and even animals. Homeopathic remedies are made from natural sources such as plants and minerals which are processed in such a way to raise their healing potential. They are completely safe.
Some complaints can heal without treatment, but when the healing process is faulty or slow, homeopathic treatment can stimulate the body's innate healing ability to restore health.
Homeopathy can be used to treat any illness for which medical treatment would normally be sought. Many people use homeopathy as an alternative to conventional medical treatment and others use it to complement the treatment they receive from their G.P or consultant. For example, a patient with rheumatoid arthritis might also take homeopathic remedies. These patients are safe in the knowledge that homeopathy will not cause side effects or interfere with any other medication being taken.
Homeopathy works on the "law of similars" also described as "treating like with like" which was discovered by the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, over 200 years ago. It works by prescribing a minute dose of a substance that when given in large doses could cause the symptoms a sick person experiences. For example, it is known that coffee is a stimulant and can disturb sleep. When given as a homeopathic remedy (coffea) to a person experiencing similar symptoms, it will create the opposite effect and improve disturbed sleeping patterns.
Homeopathy treats the person as a whole, rather than simply treating the physical or emotional symptoms in isolation. Most people are aware that emotional imbalances such as grief and shock can lead to physical illness, if untreated or suppressed. The opposite is also true in that pain can cause depression, anxiety and stress. Therefore, the mind and body cannot be separated, both in disease and health.
Homeopaths treat each patient as an individual in order to find the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms he/she is experiencing. For this reason, 5 patients suffering with migraine headaches are unlikely to be prescribed the same remedy. Differences between the patients will include - personality, lifestyle, history of illness, the type of pain, location of pain, the cause(s) of the headaches and so on.
The consultation process
The initial consultation lasts about 1 1/2 hours. Time is taken to understand the complaint in the context of each person; to identify the physical and emotional symptoms; to investigate the cause of the illness; how it affects the patient’s day-to-day life; and how he/she is coping with it. Questions are asked about the patient's presenting complaint; his/her personality, emotional state and the patient’s family history of illness.
Follow up consultations last approximately 45 minutes and are held monthly. The homeopath regularly assesses the patient’s progress with him or her so that he/she knows what to expect from treatment.
I have worked with Sue for many years with her acting as both my mentor/supervisor, my practitioner, and my children’s practitioner. She creates an atmosphere of complete candor that enables me, as her client, to provide all the information necessary for her to select the best remedy. I have experienced tremendous personal growth with her homeopathic support and personal wisdoms, and even an improvement in my physical health, which was never an issue. Despite some of the growing pains inherent with growing into a physical and non-physical healthy state, working with Sue for the past 7 years has been a wonderful experience. Sue is professional yet her natural warmth and genuine caring for her clients is easily and readily apparent. I feel that the well-being of my family is in the best of hands. --PR
How long does treatment take?
The course of treatment required depends on the sort of illness that the patient has, how long he/she has had it and how well he/she responds to treatment. For example, slowly developing complaints are unlikely to be resolved immediately. Acute complaints such as colds and fevers respond more quickly.
Some patients experience a period of exceptional ‘well-being’ after taking the first course of treatment. However, symptoms can also become worse for a while before improvement begins (common to eczema). This reaction is, however, a good sign that the remedy is taking effect.
